Giuliani Pressured to Abandon Loyola Speech

Thursday, 19 May 2005 12:00 AM

In a letter to David Haddad, Interim President of Loyola, Keeler stated that "…there will be no representative from the Archdiocese participating in any event honoring former Mayor Giuliani."

He further stated "… by now, you understand many of the consequences that spring from an invitation having been extended to former Mayor Giuliani to receive an honorary degree at Loyola."

Keeler closed by saying "May the Lord make of this event a teaching moment for many."

Jack Ames, Director of Defend Life, Maryland's largest pro-life organization, has been leading the onslaught against what he is calling the "Illicit Loyola-Giuliani Affair."

According to Ames, Cardinal Keeler has "Giuliani on the ropes" and now it's up to grass roots pro-lifers to apply the knockout punch by flooding Giuliani's various law offices around America with calls.

"We are asking him to 'fall on his sword' and withdraw honorably from the Loyola appearance on Friday while there is still time to name a worthy replacement speaker such as Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life, Father Thomas Euteneuer of Human Life International, or Cardinal Keeler himself," Ames added.

Ames is also planning a massive demonstration on Friday if Giuliani does not withdraw. He said, "1st Mariner Arena will look like a circus on Friday if Giuliani shows up."

He added that hundreds of pro-lifers from as far away as New York and Ohio will be in Baltimore to "give Rudy a Bronx cheer and send him back home where he belongs."
