From Bad to Worse?

Wednesday, 27 November 2002 12:00 AM

Between Nov. 21 and Nov. 26, the author got, from all the sources available – Moscow media, New York-based Russian-language papers and TV channel, Taiwanese and Hong Kong media – the following data regarding Chinese-Russian relations (major theses only):

No exact data about the other "Chinese-Russian fighters" (J-10, FC-1) and nother weapon supply projects are available yet; still there are no doubts about "big progress" in these areas also.

In 1996 Yeltsin used for his presidential campaign the money received from selling abroad, through secret channels, diamonds and other jewelry from Gokhran (state jewelry treasury). Gokhran was emptied, Yeltsin was re-elected.

Now, in 2002-2003, Putin has to look for new sources. In 2003, Russia has to pay at least $17 billion in foreign debts. "Borrowing" money for the election campaigns in state coffers became difficult. Weapons export to China could become the major source of "secret financing" for the Kremlin. And strengthening the Beijing-Moscow axis provides a perfect environment for this.

Under these conditions, China would become very picky; it could obtain the following:

Finally, even some "crown jewels" from the Russian army inventory – "slightly used" but still in good shape – become very available for the PLA. This, probably, could include heavy bombers, aircraft cruisers and nuclear submarines.

In case you think that the author is just trying to draw a gloomy picture and to scare readers, to the contrary: Many "second class" items are omitted. During the last several days, some high-ranking politicians used the word "friend" in regard to Moscow and Putin. Awake, America!
