Forbes Reveals 10 Ways to Live Longer

"The exact mechanism of how personality acts as a risk factor for early death or poorer health is unclear," Dr. Toshihiko Maruta, the study's main researcher, told Forbes, adding that people who always see the glass as half empty usually suffer from physical health, career and emotional problems.

"Yet another possibility could be more directly biological, like changes in the immune system," he noted.

Conscientious people also have a knack for living longer, according to Dr. Howard Friedman, a psychologist at the University of California at Riverside.

"Those low on adult conscientiousness died sooner," Dr. Friedman told Forbes, quoting results from the 70-year Terman Life-Cycle Study, which ended in 1991. Factors such as "personality, habits, social relations, education, physical activities and cause of death" were examined in the study, said the magazine.

Pets are another key to living longer, say researchers. "Contact with companion animals triggers a relaxation response," Alan Beck, director of the Center for the Human-Animal Bond at Purdue University, told Forbes.
