Florida Supreme Court Makes No Decision on Recounts

Monday, 20 November 2000 12:00 AM

There was no word whether the decision would be released Tuesday or Wednesday.

The court issued an injunction Friday prohibiting Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris from declaring a winner after overseas ballots were reported Friday. Broward and Palm Beach counties are still conducting hand counts, and Miami-Dade didn't even start its recount until today.

"It would be highly inequitable to keep the state and nation on hold to finish a manual recount when the responsible officials failed expeditiously even to begin the process," said court papers filed by the Republicans.

Democrat Al Gore is counting on revised vote totals to put him ahead of George W. Bush in the race for the presidency.

With the addition of overseas absentee ballots Saturday, Bush leads Gore by 930 votes out of 6 million cast in Florida. Republicans accuse Democrats of trying to reverse the results of the election – changing the rules to generate the votes they need to win.
