Kirk Douglas Billie showed little emotion when Circuit Judge Leon Firtel read the verdict following a brief sentencing hearing. Firtel said the two sentences would be served concurrently.
Billie drowned his young sons when he drove his girlfriend's sport utility vehicle into a canal near the Miccosukee reservation two years ago.
After the boy's deaths, Billie met with tribal leaders - who shook his hand and "forgave" the murders. They claim jurisdiction because Billie lives on the Miccosukee reservation, but state prosecutors said the murders occurred off the reservation and violated state law.
Billie said Florida law should not apply to him because only Miccosukee law applies to the Indians.
"We don't try to impose our law on you. Why? Because you're not one of us," Billie said.
Prosecutor Reid Rubijn said Billie killed the children because he was angry with his girlfriend for the way she took care of their children. They also have an infant son.
