Fighting Erupts after Brief Cease-fire

Thursday, 24 May 2001 12:00 AM

The fighting ends a unilateral cease-fire Israel announced two days ago.

A spokesman for the Israeli armed forces said the two mortar bombs hit Netsarim's fields, causing no damage or injuries.

Soon after an Israeli contingent entered the neighboring Palestinian area of Sheikh Ajlun "to locate the sources of fire," the spokesman said.

A gun battle ensued and Israeli tanks fired two shells at Sheikh Ajlun buildings, he said.

Other soldiers blocked a coastal road in the western part of the Gaza Strip, forcing Palestinian policemen, who were guarding the area, to retreat, Palestinian officials said.

However, the Israeli spokesman contradicted their claim, saying that it were the Palestinians who blocked the road. He said the troops that entered Sheikh Ajlun, left after doing their job.

He said an Israeli-Palestinian accord gives Israel the right of hot pursuit.

In other incidents, Palestinians fired at Israeli positions in the southern Gaza Strip and at a car near the West Bank town of Halhul. Since there was no damage, the Israelis did not return fire, the spokesman said. (Beesam al-Hassam reported from Gaza and Joshua Brilliant from Tel Aviv, Israel.)
