Fighter Jets Escort Airliner to N.Y.

Two passengers were questioned and released. FBI spokesman Joseph Valiquette said they were of "no investigative interest."

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said there was apparently "some sort of confrontation" between one of the two passengers and a security screener in London.

Kelly said that after the man boarded the flight, the screener said "this individual looks like somebody who may be wanted, or words to that effect. That's what has triggered this alert."

Scotland Yard said police questioned a man at Heathrow Airport but allowed him to continue his journey. London airport officials said they didn't know of any security staff who had reported suspicions.

London officials questioned the airport screener who had said one of the passengers resembled someone on an international watch list of suspected terrorists.

Canadian fighter jets escorted the airliner over the Atlantic Ocean, and U.S. military fighter jets took over in U.S. airspace. The fighter jets flew 1.5 miles behind the Air India plane, so that passengers were not able to see them.

The plane was believed to be carrying 378 passengers and 19 crew members, according to Air India.

"There have been no problems with the flight," Lulu Iphraim, an airline representative in New York, told UPI. "We've had no more information."
