FCC Will Not Regulate Internet Phone Calls

Thursday, 12 February 2004 12:00 AM

The FCC's decision is as important as it is simple, said a CCIA spokesperson. If consumers and businesses can talk to one another without using the traditional telephone network, neither they nor the Internet itself should be subject to the complex and increasingly less relevant rules that govern the nation's phone network.

"This decision is especially simple because of the presence of numerous competitors, none of which has substantial market power," added the spokesperson.

The decision continues more than a decade of rulings in which the FCC has drawn clear lines between the old world of fixed telephone networks and the new, ever changing world of information technology. A wide range of computer and communications companies had urged the Commission to endorse the position it took today.

"The Commission got this one right, there's no doubt about it," CCIA President Ed Black said. "Applying old regulations to modern Internet technology that bares only a passing resemblance to yesterday's phone network just doesn't make sense."
