Early Tennessee Returns Favor Bush

Monday, 06 November 2000 12:00 AM

As of Monday morning, according to reports from Nashville, an estimated 50,000 ballots had been cast in Knox County, which includes Knoxville, a region of Tennessee that is known for its historic support of Republicans. That is roughly 22 percent of the 223,000 registered voters in the county.

By comparison, in traditionally Democrat Davidson County, which includes Nashville, only 14 percent of the county's 393,000 voters had cast their ballots as of Monday morning. In the more politically mixed Shelby County, which includes Memphis, 17 percent of the 536,000 registered voters had handed in early ballots.

Spokesmen for Gore, present in Nashville for election night events, declined comment. But Tennessee Republican party members are viewing the early voter turnout as another sign of Bush's strength in the state.

"Eastern Tennessee has traditionally been Republican, basically dating back to the Civil War. A huge percentage of registered voters there have voted early," said Rachel Lavender, communication director for the Tennessee Republican Party.

"That's obviously a bad sign for Gore."

"Davidson County is a toss-up, because it is usually marked Democratic," Lavender said. "But they are trending Republican right now. They are moving that way."

The latest Mason-Dixon opinion poll, released Saturday, shows Bush leading Gore in the Volunteer State, 49 percent to 45 percent.
