Downey Jr. Arrested on New Drugs Charge

Monday, 27 November 2000 12:00 AM

Downey, 35, who has just won a role in the television show "Ally McBeal," was released on police bail early yesterday after being arrested by police in Palm Springs, Calif., late on Saturday and charged with possession of cocaine and methamphetamine.

Officers responded to an anonymous telephone caller on Saturday night who said there were drugs and guns in a hotel room at the Merv Griffin Resort, the Palm Springs police department said.

They found Downey alone in the room with the cocaine and methamphetamine. He was arrested without incident, the police added.

A police spokeswoman said he was released on $15,000 bail yesterday morning.

Downey was arrested three times in 1996. One one occasion his urine tested positive for morphine/heroin, marijuana, Valium and cocaine, according to court papers.

Less than a month later he was arrested again after wandering into a neighbor's Malibu home, where he was found unconscious.

In June last year he admitted that he had violated his probation by failing to submit to drug testing, and was sent to the California state prison in Corcoran.

He was freed in August on $5,000 bail after an appeal court ruled that a lower court had erred in sentencing him and that Downey had served more than enough time to complete his prison term for drug possession.

After his release, Downey registered at a treatment center outside Los Angeles.
