Dobson Decries Salazar's Political Posturing

Tuesday, 01 March 2005 12:00 AM

Last year, then-Colorado Attorney General Salazar signed a letter with 14 other state attorneys general endorsing William Myers III - one of the very men whose nominations he is now opposing.

"In his letter to the president, Sen. Salazar claims that President Bush's decision to re-nominate judicial nominees will create 'animosity and divisiveness between the President and the United States Senate.' The president is not responsible for the divisiveness caused by the minority party of the Senate, of which Sen. Salazar is a member," Dobson said. "Each of President Bush's 10 nominees previously blocked by Democrats has had bipartisan, majority support. Only due to unprecedented tactics have they been denied confirmation."

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected this week to hold hearings on at least three nominees in addition to Myers: Terrence Boyle, Jim Dever and Robert Conrad.

"Very soon, we will arrive at the same unconstitutional impasse we witnessed last year - senators refusing to grant an up-or-down vote that would fulfill their role of advising and consenting to the president's judicial nominations," Dobson said. "At that point, I call upon Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to do all within his power to see that President Bush's nominees are treated justly."
