DNC Legal Challenge: Bush Must Act Now

Thursday, 09 November 2000 12:00 AM

Gore-Lieberman campaign chairman William Daley hinted broadly today at his press conference that the Florida vote might be challenged on legal grounds. And the all-purpose spinner, Congressman Robert Wexler, D-Fla., was right there on CNN's "Crossfire" pitching that the vote in Florida was so flawed that Gore has little choice but to proceed with a legal challenge after the mandated recount, which will be completed Thursday.

A lawsuit is actually being prepared. What are the Democrats up to in all this?

They have two goals. The first is to actually try to get a court of law to declare the vote in Florida a nullity. The remedy might even be a new statewide election for president. This is unlikely.

The real goal, which will be achieved instantaneously upon the filing of the suit, will be an attempt to de-legitimize the Bush presidency in its embryonic stage, to abort its force – its vitality – even before the oath of office is administered. Democrats are good at abortion.

The Democrats are already setting themselves up for the 2004 race. They are always one step ahead of the Republicans. They are planning to run on a bogus but psychologically powerful "We was robbed!" battle cry. They are setting up Governor Bush with this as deftly as the congressional Democrats set up his father with the tax increase that snookered him into breaking his "Read my lips, no new taxes" pledge.

They plan, with this lawsuit, to assure right now that Bush will be a one-term president, just like his father.

What should Bush do this instant? He must fire a shot across their bow, so threatening in tone that the anticipated suit will not be filed. Bush should say this: "Don't go there. If you do, then we shall prove your national vote fraud, which includes your illegal waiving of criminal background checks on immigrants convicted of murder in order to get additional Democrat voters (see

It's gut-check time for Governor Bush. He needs to act decisively now, to avoid the coming constitutional crisis that the Democrats are itching for.
