Defend Marriage Now!

Wednesday, 29 September 2004 12:00 AM

"The future we will pass on to our children may well ride on the outcome of this vote. I am convinced that, unless we pass a constitutional amendment defining marriage in the United States as the union of a man and a woman, the U.S. Supreme Court in just a few years will 'announce' a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage. We need only look to the reasoning in Lawrence v Texas, where the Court found that States could not 'demean' homosexual conduct. This reasoning, as the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and trial courts in the State of Washington have already concluded, may soon require every State to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

"If so, the core meaning of marriage will be radically altered. Throughout history, marriage founded on sexual complementarity, lifelong commitment, and the bearing and rearing of children has been the cornerstone of successful societies. Recognition of same-sex 'marriage' will reduce this vital institution to nothing more than official recognition of the personal preferences of any two, three, four or more 'marital partners.'

"No positive benefits will accrue from this radical revision. All of the probable consequences will be profoundly negative. Unfortunately, however, once marriage has been drained of all meaning, it may be impossible to undue the damage.

Richard wants you to know that you can make a difference. How?

For starters, refer to the list below of all the co-sponsors of the Federal Marriage Amendment and see if your representative is one of them. If your representative is on the list, call your representative and thank him or her for their support, urge them to stand fast, and to do whatever they can to get their colleagues to vote for the amendment, as well. If your representative is not a co-sponsor, call them too, and urge them to defend marriage.

Whether you call them or email them, focus on three points:

1. Preserving marriage is essential to passing on a healthy and strong society to our children.

2. You are convinced that a constitutional amendment is the only way we can protect marriage in the United States from being radically redefined by activist federal judges.

3. You want him or her to vote for the Federal Marriage Amendment.

It's that simple. Let your voice be heard. The momentum is gathering for and behalf of traditional marriage, and yet, if we don't reign in the judges now, popular support may become meaningless, as these self- appointed Gods in robes will continue to usurp the legislative powers from Congress and the people, sending down decrees from the bench as if from Heaven.

Or that other place.
