Daschle: I'm Killing the Economic Stimulus

Daschle said Republicans and Democrats could not agree on a plan and that neither could meet the 60-vote test required in the Senate to overcome the inevitable objections of one party or another.

"With great regret, I will pull the bill tomorrow with the offer that should they [Republicans] choose at any time to sit down and to sincerely want to find some solution, I'm ready. We're ready," claimed Daschle, a constant critic of the president and likely contender for the Democrats' presidential nomination in 2004.

Daschle's decision came just one day after the Bush administration released its proposed

Returning to the White House from a speech in Pittsburgh, the president slammed Daschle's latest example of obstructionism. "I'm very disappointed. There's a lot of workers who hurt, and they need help," the president said.

"We got a good bill out of the House, and I believe we had a good chance to get a good bill out of the Senate last fall. There were enough votes to pass a bill, and I'm just disappointed."

Democrats have hammered Bush's wartime budget for pushing into deficit spending and using money that both parties had hoped to set aside to pay down the debt raised from Social Security payments.

Republicans have countered that deficit spending would be required for only a few years and that an economic stimulus is needed to help the economy and create jobs for Americans hit by recession.
