Daschle Tries to Shift Blame for Killing Economic Stimulus

Wednesday, 06 February 2002 12:00 AM

"I understand our Republican colleagues accused us of killing the economic stimulus bill," said Daschle, D-S.D. "We know that it's dead. The question is, who did it?"

Democrats did not like the GOP bill's business tax breaks aimed at job creation, and Republicans balked at spending in Daschle's version.

"The president certainly was forthcoming, agreed to compromises," countered Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss.

"And I want to emphasize again that the bipartisan centrist package that passed the House was a compromise, and it did have the support of a majority of the Senate."

Two separate votes Wednesday proved that neither party could leap the 60-vote hurdle to overcome objections among some members of the opposite party and push their version through.

Several economic experts, including Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, have said the economy might well recover without the bill. President Bush's budget proposal unveiled this week assumed a plan would pass, pushing the government into an additional $77 billion budget deficit next year. Without passage of the bill, the government would be in the red by around $3 billion, according to the Bush budget.
