Daschle Tries to Rescue Landreiu

Friday, 29 November 2002 12:00 AM

Apparently the Bayou Democrat won’t have to look too far. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has guaranteed her a spot on the Appropriations Committee in the next Congress, reports Roll Call's Paul Kane.

The pledge is particularly significant since the GOP takeover means Daschle & Co. will have fewer committee slots than before to divide up.

But the Senate's top Democrat is doing his best to convince Louisianans that voting Democratic has its rewards. “Mary Landrieu has become a powerful and effective voice for the Louisiana families and America’s priorities,” he reminds her constituents, hoping it will keep the GOP's margin of Senate control down to 51 seats.

Still, with Terrell leading in recent polls and support pouring in from leading Republicans, including President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Louisiana Governor Mike Foster, it's an uphill battle for Louisiana Democrats.
