CWA Calls for End to Unwarranted Attacks on John Bolton

"At this critical time, when changes are absolutely necessary and the need is so great for the U.S. to be vigorously and proudly represented, President Bush's choice of John Bolton is wise. Bolton's history of clear thinking and tough-mindedness proves that he will meet those demands. John Bolton's opponents reveal their own high regard for the dysfunctional U.N. in their preference for an ambassador who puts the U.N. above the U.S.," added Wright.

CWA joined 100 organizations in signing a letter to Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Richard Lugar, expressing support for John Bolton's confirmation: "When speaking in Seoul two years ago, Bolton truthfully called life in North Korea a 'hellish nightmare' and described the hundreds of thousands of people Kim Jong-Il had 'locked in prison camps with millions more mired in abject poverty, scrounging the ground for food.' As a result, the North Korean regime railed against Bolton. Unshaken by intimidation tactics, Bolton continues to speak eloquently and effectively against that country's tyranny."

Bolton even received the commendation of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher: "A capacity for straight talking rather than peddling half-truths is a strength and not a disadvantage in diplomacy. Particularly in the case of a great power like America, it is essential that people know where you stand and assume that you mean what you say."

"Despite these stellar recommendations, Bolton's opponents continue to assail him with unsubstantiated rumors and false accusations, which should have no place in a senate debate," said Wright. "Compared to his impressive work on behalf of American values, resorting to gossip and name-calling shows how bereft John Bolton's opponents are of legitimate arguments."
