Condit Hints at Retirement

Friday, 07 September 2001 12:00 AM

Several Democrats told the Post that Condit hinted at retiring over the August recess. However, he wants to make the decision on his own, rather than bowing to pressure from others, sources said.

Condit, who has until Dec. 7 to decide whether to seek reelection or not, has made no public comments about his political future but his aides have indicated that he plans to seek an eighth term.

In an interview on CNN's "Larry King Live," Condit's son had also urged his father to quit politics.

Democratic leaders increasingly view Condit as unelectable and a political liability because of questions about his relationship with a 24-year old intern, Chandra Levy, the report said.

Several Democrats interviewed by the Post said Condit's Aug. 23 interview with Connie Chung on ABC's "Primetime Thursday," in which he refused to admit whether he had an affair with Levy, outraged them and dramatically eroded his political standing on Capitol Hill.

Law enforcement authorities and members of Levy's family have said that Condit did have a romantic relationship with the former federal intern.

Levy has been missing since April 30, when she was last seen at her Washington apartment.

State lawmakers recently unveiled a proposal under which Condit's district, along with those of several other incumbents, would become more Democratic, but at the same time harder for Condit to win because it would carve out much of his existing district.
