Complacency Can Kill

Monday, 20 November 2000 12:00 AM

If the count continues this way, Bush will win – even if the court rules in favor of Gore and keeps the manual recount.

One caveat: If the court allows the manual recount AND allows the local canvassing boards to have discretion and consider ballots that are indented with "pregnant and dimpled" chads, watch out!

If the counties count these indented ballots, the vote totals can turn dramatically against Bush within hours.

In fact, we know that in Broward County more than 10,000 of these questionable ballots have already been set aside because they have dimpled or pregnant chads.

Bush supporters should not become complacent because vote totals have gone their way so far.

Complacency can kill.

In the initial days of this election crisis, Bush’s team looked lost and complacent after having been declared the winner first. Gore gained momentum.

Bush’s team, led by Montana Gov. Marc Racicot, has engineered a turnaround for Bush by being tough and aggressive. Racicot’s hard-hitting press conference Saturday was long overdue.

Bush and his staff work best when they are slightly behind.

We saw Bush’s drive after New Hampshire and his come-from-behind win over John McCain.

The worst thing to happen to Bush during the closing weeks of the campaign were his high poll numbers.

Almost every pollster showed him miles ahead of Gore.

Good poll numbers led to complacency. Bush’s campaign became soft and weak, allowing a 16-point lead over Gore to evaporate.

NewsMax.com was heavily criticized by our readers for publishing Zogby’s poll numbers. Zogby continually showed Bush behind.

As it turned out, Zogby called this election better than any other pollster.

Had Bush taken Zogby’s numbers more seriously, he would have waged a stronger campaign and wouldn’t have been in the predicament he finds himself in.

Similarly, the race now is for Bush to lose.

He and his supporters should not become complacent with the slim lead he now holds if recounting is allowed to continue.
