Clashes Renew in Israel

At least four students were injured by a car bomb that exploded Wednesday at the entrance to an Israeli school in Netania, north of Tel Aviv.

Palestinian security spokesman said that Israeli tanks and bulldozers entered about 100 feet into a Palestinian-controlled area in Rafah refugee camp on the borders between southern Gaza Strip and Egypt. The spokesman said that the bulldozers razed the area, where hundreds of Palestinians threw stones and firebombs at the Israeli soldiers who opened fire and wounded at least six residents. Among the injured were three children, one of whom was listed in critical condition.

The spokesman said that Israeli army tanks also shelled Palestinian houses and a Palestinian public security post.

Israeli radio reported that two mortar shells were fired at the Jewish settlement of Itsemona on southern Gaza Strip, but the blasts caused no injuries. The Islamic Jihad in Gaza took blame for firing the mortars.

Brig. Rebhi Arafat, West Bank security chief, said that the meeting between Palestinian and Israeli security officials that took place Tuesday and that was attended by the Americans did not achieve any progress. Arafat said that Israeli security officials asked the Palestinians to implement the cease-fire, but the Palestinians told the Israelis "we are not those who are opening fire."

He said the Palestinians asked Israel to implement suggestions from Mitchell Commission's report as one package, including a lifting on all closures and security measures the Israelis have placed in the Palestinian territories.

"Once the Israeli army ends all those measures, it would be possible to continue going forward because the problem is not only security, it is also political," said Arafat.

Arafat said if all the Israelis wanted from the meetings was to end the intifada while they continue their activities, "I don't think that it is worth continuing these meetings."
