Church of the Nativity Catches Fire

Wednesday, 01 May 2002 12:00 AM

The fire was put out after about half an hour, Fox News Channel reported Wednesday night.

An Israeli officer said the fire followed a heavy exchange of shooting between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian fighters holed up inside the building. More than 180 people are still inside the church.

According to tradition, the church in Manger Square is built on the site of the birth of Jesus.

An Israeli military source told United Press International there were flames in residential quarters, but it was not clear whether the fire was limited to those areas only.

There was heavy shooting there Wednesday night. Palestinian officials claimed Israeli soldiers tried to storm the site. An Israeli military source said Palestinians in the church fired at Israeli troops that surround the compound and that soldiers fired into the air.

The standoff began April 3 after Israeli troops and tanks rolled into Bethlehem and the Palestinians took refuge in the church.
