China Says Spy Plane Can't Fly Home

Thursday, 17 May 2001 12:00 AM

"We have already said that it is impossible for it to fly back," Foreign Ministry spokesman Sun Yuxi said at a regular news briefing.

Sun said he had read reports of a U.S. request to charter a Russian cargo plane to fly the downed EP-3 surveillance plane out of China but that no official request had been made.

Sun said discussions are continuing through diplomatic channels over the fate of the naval aircraft which made an emergency landing April 1 on Hainan after colliding with a Chinese fighter jet over the South China Sea.

Antonov Airlines confirmed this week that it had been approached by the United States about chartering a cargo plane large enough to transport to a U.S. airbase in Okinawa, Japan.

Pentagon officials have continually pressed a request that the plane be repaired and flown home after a U.S. team of technicians inspected the aircraft two weeks ago and reported that it could be repaired.

China has insisted that "it is impossible" for the plane to leave unaided and analysts say this could be a face saving measure for officials in Beijing who have come under fire at home for being seen as weak when facing off with Washington over the incident.

The Chinese fighter jet crashed and was never found along with its pilot, Wang Wei, who has been lionized in state-run media as a national hero, stirring up already strong nationalist sentiment.
