China's Dictatorship Doomed, Top Taiwan Official Says

Friday, 04 May 2001 12:00 AM

"Things are changing" in China, Taiwan's Information Minister Su Tzen-ping says. "Economic development will be followed by political change, but we are not quite sure how quickly.

"I think political liberalization in China is inevitable."

During an interview with Washington Times reporters and editors, Su said that his government had no interest in seeing relations between the U.S. and mainland China deteriorate and wants continued trade relations with China, for Taiwan and the United States.

"What we want is a win-win situation," he told a Times luncheon meeting. "We do not welcome conflict. We want good relations between the United States and China, between Taiwan and China, and between Taiwan and the United States."

Su praised President Bush for stating clearly that the U.S. would defend Taiwan from an attack by the Chinese communists.

The president's statement drew catcalls from the U.S. media and Democrats who charged that Bush had altered longstanding U.S. policy which has in the past been ambiguous. His supporters, however, said he had cleared the air of doubts raised during the Clinton administration about how the U.S. would react, if at all, to an invasion by Beijing's forces.

"There has always been a U.S. commitment to peace in the Taiwan Strait," Su said of Bush's recent television interview in which he said the United States would do "whatever it takes" to defend Taiwan from attack from the mainland.

"Mr. Bush has made this commitment more convincing. We welcome that," he said. "With a clearer position, it will better preserve the peace in the strait."
