Chicago Educrats Fire Arab Teacher With Terror Ties

Friday, 06 June 2003 12:00 AM

Muhammed Salah, 50, worked as a substitute teacher in the government school system and at City Colleges despite being on a federal list of terrorists.

Salah moved to Chicago from Jordan in 1970. He was arrested in Israel in 1993 and pleaded guilty in a military court in 1995. His name was added to a Treasury Department list of terrorists.

But on his job applications, when asked if he had ever been arrested, he said no. Salah's brother, Mahmoud Salah, said Salah believed the application only sought information about his criminal history in the United States.

In 1998, the government seized about $1.4 million in assets from Salah and a nonprofit group alleging the funds were destined for the Islamic terrorist group Hamas, including a terrorist attack that killed an Israeli soldier.
