Castro: Troops Prepared for Nukes

Sunday, 02 September 2001 12:00 AM

Castro told the closing session of the NGO session at the conference that Cuba suspected South Africa had nuclear weapons technology from Israel, and maybe European sources, according to reports on South Africa's SAPA news service Web site.

"While we were fighting close to the Namibian border where there was the possibility of great battles to be fought in that area, the forces of the apartheid regime had seven nuclear warheads, and Europe was aware of that," SAPA quoted Castro as saying.

Castro claimed Israel supplied the technology for South Africa's nuclear program, and Israel in turn had help from some European countries. A mysterious explosion off the coast of South Africa in the late 1970s sparked rumors of cooperation between Israel and South Africa on nuclear weapons.

Long after the Cubans left Angola, then-president FW de Klerk of South Africa announced in 1993 that South Africa had made six warheads and had dismantled all of them.
