Canada Nears End of Mad Cow Probe

Monday, 09 June 2003 12:00 AM

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency told CNN Monday tests of more than 1,500 cattle have returned no positive results, meaning the active investigation into the outbreak is drawing to a close.

Spongiform encephalopathy, the scientific name for mad cow disease, is a fatal brain-wasting disease believed spread through contaminated cattle feed. It cannot be passed from cow to cow.

A human variant of the disease was identified in 1996 and linked to eating contaminated meat and cattle products.
