Bush: Prayer Among the Good Spawned by 9-11

"They have prayed for comfort in time of grief; for understanding in a time of anger; for protection in a time of uncertainty," Bush said. "Many, including me, have been on bended knee. The prayers of this nation are a part of the good that has come from the evil of September the 11th, more good than we could ever have predicted. Tragedy has brought forth the courage and the generosity of our people."

Bush made his

In a refrain from his prayer breakfast speech last year, Bush said every religion is welcomed in the United States.

"Our country has never had an official faith. Yet we have all been witnesses these past 21 weeks to the power of faith to see us through the hurt and loss that has come to our country," Bush said.

"As a nation, we know that the ruthless will not inherit the Earth," Bush said. "Faith teaches humility, and with it, tolerance. Once we have recognized God's image in ourselves, we must recognize it in every human being."

U.S. officials blame the Muslim terrorist network al-Qaeda for the attacks. In the months after the attacks, Bush told the nation that Islam was not to blame and said it was a religion of peace.

"Respect for the dignity of others can be found outside of religion, just as intolerance is sometimes found within it. Yet for millions of Americans, the practice of tolerance is a command of faith," Bush said. "When our country was attacked, Americans did not respond with bigotry. People from other countries and cultures have been treated with respect. And this is one victory in the war against terror."

The National Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by the independent Fellowship Foundation, a Virginia evangelical group.

Bush was accompanied by National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, members of his Cabinet, and Lisa Beamer, widow of United Airlines Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer, who along with other passengers tried to retake their airliner before it crashed in western Pennsylvania. Beamer is credited with saying, "Let's roll," before passengers attacked hijackers, and Bush often uses the catch phrase in speeches.
