"It is a way for me to speak to people that believe that Lebanese society ought to be free," he said.

Turning to peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians, Bush said he continues to believe that "peace is within hand" and said his administration "will do that which is necessary to move the process forward."

He urged Israel to "withdraw from the settlements" in order to allow for "contiguous territory into which a Palestinian state can grow."

Bush said the Palestinians must "fight any terrorist activities within the territories," and said his administration has sent personnel to help train and consolidate Palestinian security forces. He also called upon the Arab world to help the Palestinians "build the necessary structures for democracy."

King Abdullah echoed President Bush's support for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, describing him as "a man of his word" who will "give 110 percent to deal with the security issues and to push the process forward"

"I truly believe that in this man Prime Minister Sharon has a partner for peace and I'm very optimistic that between the two leaders that the process will go forward and go forward positively," Abdullah said.

Bush also said he looks forward to hearing the results from the scheduled March 22-23 summit of Arab nations in Algeria, and he praised Jordanian authorities for proposing government accountability measures.

He said the United States has entered trade negotiations with Jordan, adding "it's much easier to reform when there's prosperity."
