Bush Blasts Gore on Social Security

Gore's plan, the Bush campaign says, will result in higher payroll taxes or a massive cut in benefits for today's younger workers.

The Bush campaign quotes experts to buttress its argument that Gore isn't fixing Social Security – he's simply postponing painful decisions to a later date.

The Gore campaign has attacked Bush for his "risky" Social Security plan of allowing workers to privately invest some of their payroll taxes, if they want to do so. But some observers say at least Bush is making an effort to begin the necessary overhaul – without cutting into the benefits of any current retirees.
