British Hospital Separates Siamese Twins, One Dead

Tuesday, 07 November 2000 12:00 AM

Surgeons at St. Mary's Hospital in Manchester said both twins would have died without the surgery. A team of 20 specialists took part in the highly complex operation.

Jodie is being treated in intensive care; the next 72 hours will be crucial to her chances for survival. She will be monitored for possible signs of post-operative infections or complications, media reports said.

The girls' fates have been in the hands of the surgeons, lawyers and clergy who have been arguing about whether to perform the operation.

The separation was the climax of a legal battle that began after doctors sought permission from the High Court to carry out the operation against the parents' wishes.

The twins' parents, both devout Roman Catholics from the Maltese island of Gozo, are opposed to the operation on religious grounds.

In September, the parents made a privately funded appeal against the High Court's decision, which they subsequently lost.

On Nov. 3, the Pro-Life Alliance also failed in two court attempts to halt the operation.

The twins were joined at the abdomen, with their legs at right angles to their conjoined upper bodies and their spines fused. Doctors had always intended to carry out the operation to separate the twins, who were born in August, during the first three months of their lives.
