British Go After Al Qaeda in Afghanistan

Wednesday, 29 May 2002 12:00 AM

The loya jirga, Afghanistan's traditional grand council of leaders, is to meet June 10-15 to choose a transitional administration. An interim administration headed by Hamid Karzai has run Afghanistan since U.S. forces toppled the Taliban regime.

"It's no secret those remaining forces who were not beaten have crossed the border into Pakistan," said Tony Matthews, a spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense. "The idea is to keep them away from Afghanistan while the coalition establishes stability."

British troops moved into the southeastern region of Khost on Wednesday, close to the Pakistan border. Matthews said the region remained very unstable. Royal Marines are moving into the region in small groups, mostly by vehicle and on foot, he said.

"This is seen as the best way to establish long-term stability in the country, because it's important to keep out the elements that caused the problem in the first place," Matthews said.

British forces will be aided by coalition air and ground support, Matthews said.

"They're suited for it. They're ready for it," said Lt. Cmdr. Frank Merriman, a U.S. Central Command spokesman. "That's a real dangerous area, and the operations are going on there to deal with the ongoing threat."

U.S. forces continue security operations around Bagram air base, Merriman said.
