Blair, Khatami Talk

Thursday, 20 September 2001 12:00 AM

The 15-minute conversation came as Blair was en route to the United States. He has been reported very satisfied with his conversation with Khatami, calling it "remarkable."

The official Islamic Republic News Agency said Khatami reiterated his rejection to a "hasty" military action against Afghanistan.

"A (human) catastrophe should not be responded (to) with another catastrophe," Khatami said, as prospects of a U.S. retaliatory attack on Iran's neighbor of Afghanistan increases. "The Islamic world may be at odds with the West over certain issues like Palestine, but it has condemned terrorism and last week's terrorist attacks on the United States."

Khatami said that Iran had exchanged views with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the chairman of the 56-member Organization of Islamic Conference to intervene and put an end the ongoing crisis. And in a letter to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, who currently chairs the OIC, the Iranian president called Monday for an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the member countries.

For his part, Blair highlighted the important role Iran could play in the crisis, IRNA said, adding that Blair, like his Iranian counterpart, also came out in support of a U.N.-led coalition against terrorism. So far, however, there have been no comments from Iranian officials as to how Iran would contribute to the campaign.

Since the attacks last Tuesday on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, causing the deaths of more than 5,000 people, Iranian leaders -- from reformists to conservatives -- have strongly condemned the actions.

Iran and the United States severed ties not long after the U.S. embassy in Tehran was overrun by Iranian militants in November 1979, and the holding of its staff hostage for 444 days. After a long period of strained relations. Britain's ties with Iran have improved significantly over the past few years. In September 1998, the two countries decided to normalize relation, upgrading it to an ambassadorial level in May 1999.
