Behind the 'Spin', What Did We Give Up?

We may not know the answer to this key question for months.

For example, down the road when the Bush administration announces its arms sale package to Taiwan, will this EP-3 incident have affected that decision?

If we do

If such a concession indeed takes place, then the Bush Administration will have failed miserably in its ultimate responsibility to stand firm against aggression and repression.

Another thing we will hear and read are a spate of 'leaks' from a million "authors of success" – all claiming credit for breaking the logjam. Particularly we will read that Colin Powell and his Deputy Secretary of State, Richard Armitage, were the "key players here."

Nothing is more disgusting than to see the naked political ambition of Washington bureaucrats when there is some development from which they can gain.

Funny, isn’t it, that none of them are anywhere near the 'epicenter' when something goes bad?

Beyond the ‘who’ and ‘how’ of the ending of this crisis comes the revelation that the Beijing regime acted like a rogue nation. Holding American Navy and Air Force personnel against their will – with no formal charges filed – is the behavior of despots and barbarians. And knowing this, we should no longer fool ourselves by the fancy-pants language we have become so used to hearing: how "crucial our bilateral relationship is."

That’s all this so-called relationship is: a money-making venture for these businesspeople – and for political prostitutes like Henry Kissinger and his acolytes who parade around as so-called experts but in fact just charge huge fees to open doors in Beijing and D.C.

This crisis exposed much here. Perhaps the most glaring is the wonderful power of the combined American electronic news media. When that ‘machine’ focuses on one thing – the plight of the 24 crew people – then it forces all relevant governments to solve the problem.

Oh, how I wish that ‘machine’ could be focused on the hundreds of American POWs still alive and
