BBC Against Freedom?

Tuesday, 18 September 2001 12:00 AM

Now, as an American in Europe searching for TV news in the English language, I see BBC TV’s chief news commentator Nick Gowing. I hear defeatism, condescension toward America and daily innuendo trying to diminish our president and his team and their policies to block terrorism at its roots.

Americans in Europe have few choices for news in English; only CNN, MSNBC and BBC are offered. I have difficulties saying which represents the greater voice of doubts. Tony Blair, the British prime minister, has shown exemplary clarity at this time and certainly voiced no insecurity whatever as to where he personally and where his government stands. The danger is to great, and Tony Blair tells us that party allegiances must now be put aside for a considerable time.

BBC appears to have different aims. It has earned itself the distinction of having become Europe’s expert outlet for spreading insecurity, and Ted Turner’s CNN appears conservative in comparison. The BBC hardly misses a news hour when this powerful medium does not lean toward the politically correct: Better use politics and discussion with terrorists before definitive actions. Better defer to the U.N., consider the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands.

Announcer Nick Gowing as today’s Neville Chamberlain? That would unduly elevate this news-fabricator. Chamberlain, with a bureaucrat’s posture, carried an umbrella wherever he went, a gray-whitish somewhat weakly appearance. Our fellow Gowing looks the standard Brit, neatly shaven, middle-of-the-road fellow. How appearances can mislead.

It is regrettable that Fox News Channel has not reached Europe yet. American and European listeners would have access to more balanced information instead of being required to listen to doubt and barely camouflaged anti-Americanism. Yes, we find a few other doubters of our values for freedom and individualism who are prominently featured by the BBC. Viewers will, undoubtedly, have noticed.
