Armey: Bush's Freedom Corps 'Obnoxious'

Tuesday, 05 February 2002 12:00 AM

USA Freedom Corps, one of President Bush's new legislative goals, already has a powerful foe in House Majority Leader Dick Armey, who vowed Tuesday to do all he could to defeat legislation authorizing the program.

The president announced his plan for USA Freedom Corps during last week's State of the Union speech. It would urge each American to donate two years or 4,000 hours of community service during their lifetimes.

Libertarians immediately criticized the plan for resembling "big government Clintonism." And Tuesday, Armey joined the chorus of critics.

The legislation "will not pass if I can help it," Armey told CNSNews.com. "America is great at giving from the heart, but I think it is a bad idea for government to mandate volunteerism."

He called the idea for USA Freedom Corps "obnoxious."

After his State of the Union speech, President Bush visited several cities in the South to promote his initiative, urging Americans who want to fight terrorism to "do something kind for a neighbor ... love somebody. Mentor a child. Stand up to evil with acts of goodness and kindness."
