Iradj Eftekharipour, 37, was charged with trying to take a firearm on an airline flight. He had just arrived on a flight from St. Martin in the Dutch Antilles on American Airlines Flight 1980. Officials there were queried about how he managed to get the gun aboard the flight to Miami.

About three hours after he arrived at Miami International Airport Tuesday afternoon he went through the security checkpoint on the way to his connecting flight.

"The security baggage screener at the X-ray machine observed an object with the outline of firearm contained within a black cloth fanny bag belonging to Eftekharipour," said FBI agent Charles O'Neal in an affidavit.

The suspect told the baggage screener that the gun was plastic, but police said the firearm was a black metal revolver loaded with six rubber bullets. There were 12 additional rubber bullets in his fanny pack.

Eftekharipour said he carried the weapon for his personal protection.

It was the first of two incidents at Miami International Airport within 24 hours. Wednesday morning, a Russian-born limousine driver from New York was caught with a cigarette lighter containing a hidden switchblade.

Georgy Sulava had just arrived on a United Airlines flight from Brazil and was trying to get on a connecting flight to New York when baggage screeners found the lighter-switchblade with a hand search.

He said he bought the item in Brazil as a souvenir and a gift. He was later released on $500 bond.
