Arafat Orders Cease-fire with Israel

Arafat also wished the Israeli people a "happy new year," as the Jewish New Year begins Tuesday.

"I hope that this occasion will be a start of a new era of peace and security for the Israeli and the Palestinian people and the people in the region. I tell the Israelis 'Shana Tovah' (happy new year)," said Arafat in the letter.

He said the Palestinians still believed that peaceful political solutions marked the only path for solving difference between the Palestinians and Israelis.

"I have issued strict instructions to be committed to the cease-fire. We hope the Israeli government would respond to this peaceful call and implement (their own) cease-fire," said Arafat.

Arafat said he is willing to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres whenever the Israelis decide.

About 20 Palestinians were reportedly wounded in fighting in the West Bank town of Bitunia, where a house was hit by a tank shell, and Gaza City, where seven schoolboys were injured after throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.
