Arab Terrorist Murders Jewish Student in Old City

Thursday, 25 August 2005 12:00 AM

Police rushed to the scene and discovered a second stabbing victim - Shmuel Matt - with stomach wounds. Medics tried to resuscitate him as he was rushed to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he died while undergoing an operation. Police discovered the 30-centimeter (12-inch) knife at the scene.

The first victim was hospitalized at Shaarei Zedek Hospital.

Both victims were studying at the Mir Yeshiva in Jerusalem, not far from the Old City. Shmuel Matt arrived in Israel about 18 months ago, and was scheduled to be married this coming November.

The attacker was described as being in his 30s, and police set up roadblocks in pursuit of him at all entrances to Jerusalem.

Some 300 Jewish residents of the Old City took part in a spontaneous protest later in the evening, outside the Kishle police station near the Jaffa Gate. They demanded improved security in the area, and that the police not take the body for a religiously-forbidden autopsy. Four students were arrested in the course of the protest.

Shmuel has three siblings in Israel who demanded that the police not take the body to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute, but the police refused to adhere to their request. The Jerusalem Magistrates Court was scheduled to hold a hearing on their demand this morning, but before it could rule, the police were finally persuaded to accept the findings of the forensic team at the scene of the murder.

Shmuel Matt's funeral was to leave from the Mir Yeshiva at 5:30 PM , heading for the Har HaMenuchot cemetery.
