AOL Time Warner Sues Microsoft Over Netscape

Wednesday, 23 January 2002 12:00 AM

AOL wants the court to issue an injunction against Microsoft to help restore competition between the two browsers. It also wants an unspecified monetary settlement.

A federal court of appeals last year upheld a June 2000 ruling that Microsoft had broken anti-trust laws and had harmed Netscape. Through various marketing schemes, Microsoft encouraged computer manufacturers and Internet providers to give away its Web browser instead of Netscape.

The new lawsuit is a "logical extension" of the anti-trust ruling, Randall J. Boe, America Online's lawyer, said in a statement.

"There is no question that Microsoft's conduct violated the law and harmed competition and consumers," Boe said.

Microsoft lawyers and officials were not immediately available for comment.

In the highly competitive and changing world of the Internet, Netscape says it lost browser licensing revenues and market share from Microsoft's strategy, including "portal" revenues.

"Microsoft's illegal actions and the harm to Netscape are ongoing," the lawsuit says.
