No Answer at the Palace – Queen Bans Cell Phones

Monday, 13 November 2000 12:00 AM

The order applies to mobile phones and pagers carried by stewards, pages and footmen, according to the order issued by Vice Adm. Tom Blackburn, the Master of the Queen's Household.

For a time, palace insiders said, the royals found it "a bit of a laugh" when servants' phones rang during meals. But Queen Elizabeth II's humor snapped when several cell phones went off during a banquet for foreign dignitaries at Buckingham Palace.

What particularly got on the royal nerves apparently were the customized melodies such as the "Hawaii-Five-0" theme, "Colonel Bogey" and "Dixie" that some servants had programmed into their phones.

"No one wants mobile phones going off during a state banquet," said a Buckingham Palace spokesman. "This is really a case of common sense and good manners."

"The memo was to formalize a position that has existed for some time," he said. "In the past, it has been verbal guidance."

The ban applies to Buckingham Palace, which employs some 300 people, Windsor Castle, Sandringham in Norfolk, Holyroodhouse Palace in Edinburgh and Balmoral in the Scottish Highlands. The only exemptions are royal staff with desk jobs, who need cell phones for their work. The palace spokesman said all servants can use the phones during work breaks and pay phones are available for emergencies.
