Analysis: Supreme Court Ruling Is Not Pro-Gore

Friday, 17 November 2000 12:00 AM

Big deal.

For the high court to have done otherwise would have allowed Secretary of State Katherine Harris to moot substantially its determination of whether to include the improper hand recounts in those vote totals. To put it simply, it makes sense to have an official certification of the vote after what "is" the vote is determined.

The Supreme Court's ruling gives absolutely no indication of how it is going to rule on that issue.

We are also this evening seeing a replay of what the media do so often and increasingly less effectively: ridiculing the bases for any pro-Bush development and becoming ecstatic with any development the Gore spinners desperately try to characterize as a devastating blow to Bush.

Logic, law and facts don't matter much with these folks. Just replay the Lewinsky and impeachment tapes you might have. Remember the stuff about how whatever was on Monica's blue dress was probably removed by dry cleaning?

Gore's stain is already all over this election – and on whatever character is or was there in the first place. His attempted theft-by-lawyer has rendered him nearly unable to govern. Millions of voters, having seen his personality unmasked in the last 10 days, are disgusted. Many of them voted for him.

All the Supreme Court has done is delay the celebration for the winning side.

Whose party it is going to be is not fully certain, but the desperate spinning of one side gives an awfully good clue.
