Analysis: Bush Should Take Gore's Offer

That advice was ignored. It was also ignored when seven days ago I had a telephone conversation with Bush's Florida general counsel and told him that Jim Baker would do well to get off this patently false assertion that counting these ballots by machine was the most accurate means of counting them.

Bull. We all know now about hanging chad. I knew about it in 1988, as did the California attorney general, who advised all states in the union, in 1982, to get rid of these horrible, antiquated, inaccurate computer punch ballots and reading machines.

Bush now needs to grasp as if it were a life preserver the Gore offer for a statewide hand count, with adequate security safeguards. Why? Because this thing is now in the courts, big time. Judges, particularly the ones called "justices" sitting on the Florida Supreme Court, are not going to be predisposed to give Bush what he wants: a final vote with no hand counts.

We saw in Leon County, through the "there is no real deadline" opinion of Circuit Judge Terry Lewis, what kind of treatment Bush can expect from the Florida "Supremes."

But Bush has already rejected the statewide vote count idea. Too bad. It's probably his only shot.

But to take it, Jim Baker's erroneous rhetoric about the machine counting would have to be jettisoned. Apparently, sadly, that isn't going to happen.
