America, Now a 'Hollywood Nation'?

Tuesday, 13 September 2005 12:00 AM

It's an important new work that exposes the often subtle but powerful influence the entertainment world has in shaping public opinion.

Now more than ever, Hirsen shows, Hollywood elites are blurring the lines between entertainment and news to force their views onto the rest of the country.

With their politically charged films, distorted documentaries and skewed docudramas, they're trying to set the agenda with little regard for the truth.

"Movies, TV shows, music, and other entertainment products don't merely amuse us or divert us from reality; often they convey messages about political, social, and cultural issues," Hirsen writes in "Hollywood Nation."

"And since Tinseltown remains such a liberal bastion, as we witnessed during the last presidential election with the Dem fund-raising machine, those messages usually come with a distinct lefty twist."

Even worse, many so-called journalists are doing the same thing, dangerously mixing information and entertainment in an attempt to ratchet up ratings and inject their own views into the news, reveals Hirsen, who writes the NewsMax column "The Left Coast Report."

He hammers home the dwindling distinctions between entertainment and news by citing "Today" show co-anchor Katie Couric's weeklong stint filling in for Jay Leno on the "Tonight Show."

Writes Hirsen: "So who's to tell what's real news and what's pure entertainment anymore?"

But Hirsen also reveals how the New Media are leading the counterattack against the relentless liberal assault that comes from East Coast newsrooms and Left Coast studios.

Through his extensive research and exclusive interviews with news and entertainment figures — including Bill O'Reilly, Mel Gibson, Ann Coulter, Dick Morris, Peggy Noonan, Laurie Dhue and many others — Hirsen shows how liberals can no longer dominate the political and cultural debates.

With a sharp eye and a keen wit, Hirsen takes the reader on a fun and fascinating journey through this Hollywood Nation of ours. Along the way you'll discover:

These days we're just one big Hollywood Nation. James Hirsen reminds us all that we need to pay attention to the Hollywood influence — not least because we must combat it.

"Jim Hirsen's keen sense of the entertainment industry and its warped outlook, along with his take-no-prisoners style of writing, is enough to send Streisand, Sarandon and Penn into therapy for weeks."

"'Hollywood Nation' exposes the sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant liberal spin employed by so many in the entertainment industry to push their leftist agenda and anti-free market bias. Reading this book will let you go to the movies and watch with vaccinated eyes."

"Jim Hirsen understands the overwhelming power of celebrity. You will too after reading ‘Hollywood Nation.'"

"This readable, eye-opening book makes an important contribution to the debate on media bias by focusing on the more subtle, unexpected and utterly gratuitous means that Hollywood too often employs to transmit its political messages."

"The Hollywood Left operates in a sort of Twilight Zone of political insularity, cultural arrogance, and intellectual vacuity. ‘Hollywood Nation' lays bare all of the hypocrisy, self-absorption and ill-informed points of view that drive the entertainment industry — and its powerful influence over American politics. Before you go to your next movie, read this book!"
