Ailing Dalai Lama Hospitalized

Sunday, 27 January 2002 12:00 AM

Brought to the Leelavati Hospital on a special flight from the eastern Indian province of Bihar, the 66-year-old religious leader was diagnosed with a stomach infection.

He complained of pains after climbing the Vultures Peak, a holy site in Bihar's Rajgir district.

"He is fine. He can speak and move on his own. He was brought here as a precautionary measure," said Praksh Mahtre, the hospital's Operations Director.

India's Star News TV said the spiritual leader's illness has cast a shadow over a 10-day Buddhist festival in Bodh Gaya, which started Jan. 24. Bodh Gaya is a place in Bihar where Lord Buddha reportedly received nirvana. The festival had to be postponed midway because the Dalai Lama was unable to preside over the ceremonies.

Nobel Laureate Dalai Lama and nearly 200,000 of his supporters have been living in India since 1959 after fleeing Tibet following a failed Buddhist uprising against Chinese occupation.
