Advanced Chinese Destroyers Near Taiwan

Wednesday, 02 May 2001 12:00 AM

The Hangzhou, a Sovremenny-class destroyer, was commissioned in February to join the East China Sea Fleet, Kyodo quoted a Chinese military Web site as saying. It is the second of two advanced destroyers Beijing bought from Russia to be deployed near the Taiwan Strait, Kyodo reported.

China commissioned Fuzhou, the other Russian-made destroyer, in January. At the time, Taipei confirmed that the Fuzhou passed through the Taiwan Strait that divides Taiwan from the mainland.

The Hangzhou passed through the Strait in February, Kyodo reported.

The military Web site also said China had built a deep-water wharf on a small island off Ningpo, in Zhejiang Province, for use by the two destroyers.

Communist China regards the independent republic of Taiwan as a renegade province and has threatened it with invasion if Taipei declares independence. Last week, President Bush said he would do "all it took" to defend Taiwan from a possible Chinese attack.
