'That Girl' Marlo Rants Against Bush

Thursday, 02 November 2000 12:00 AM

All Ralph Nader can do is spoil the election and elect Bush president, "a frightening and dangerous idea," said Thomas on NBC's "Today" show.

She appeared a week after her own husband, Phil Donohue, went on the show to announce his strong support for Green Party nominee Nader.

Thomas called Nader "a 20th century hero," but disagrees with the reason he's running – not to win, she said, but to form a third party in American politics.

Thomas said she strongly disagrees with her husband's outspoken support of Nader. But like many other wealthy celebrities in recent days, she reserved most of her comments for bashing Bush and promoting Gore.

"He's not ready to be president," TV's long-ago "That Girl" said of Bush.

"I mean, Al Gore has been in public office for 25 years, the last eight years deeply involved with an administration that turned this country around, from, really, Bush and Reagan policies that put us into a $3 trillion dollar debt."

Thomas derided Bush as a man who "wallowed around for 20 years and drifted, had three jobs with three different oil companies, ran all three of them into the ground ..."

She described Al Gore as a fighter for the environment, while "Texas, as we know, is third last in the country for cleaning up toxic waste dumps."

Bush "has a terrible record for going after known polluters," Thomas said, and "appointed as an environment regulator a person who had been a chemical industry lobbyist."

"On the environment, he's totally off the wall," she summed up.

NBC's Katie Couric did not challenge any of Thomas' statements, although she did occasionally try to steer the discussion back to Thomas's disagreement with Donohue.

Thomas refused to go into details – for the sake of her 20-year marriage, she said. But she admits she has asked her husband to stop telling people that there's no difference between Bush and Gore.

"That's what's made me come out fighting," Thomas said.

Thomas used Nader's candidacy to pose the question, "Where's the responsibility to make sure that Bush isn't president?"

Thomas admits she is close friends with Nader and his family, but she doesn't understand why he would risk "turning over my country to somebody who is anti-choice ... this man proudly says he is the most anti-choice governor in the nation.

"He has signed 18 provisions to restrict abortion. Gore is pro-choice," Thomas said as the interview ended – out of time, Couric said.
