More than twice as many women are running for Congress in November's midterms than in 2016, with a strong majority of them Democratic candidates, NPR reports.

According to NPR's research:

  • 431 women are running or are likely to run for the House in November.
  • 339 of those are planning to run as Democrats.
  • 212 women were running or likely to at this point in 2016.

Another 50 women are planning to run for the Senate compared to 25 at this point two years ago, NPR reports.

"I think it's really being driven on the Democratic side," Deborah Walsh, director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, told NPR.

"I think the energy and the excitement and the determination, not just to run but also in terms of who's going to show up to vote, right now, that's on the side of the Democrats."

However, Republican activists are not going to sit idly by; 92 Republican women are planning a run at the House, 21 for the Senate, and 31 for governorships, NPR reports.

"For so many of those marches, conservatives are just not included. We're not invited," Maggie's List executive director Missy Shorey told NPR. "In fact, we're disinvited sometimes. That's fine, if that's the way the left wants [us] to be treated. But ignore us at your own peril."
