President-elect Donald Trump slammed Tuesday news reports intelligence officials had presented him with compromising information Russia had obtained against him as "fake news" and "a total political witch hunt."

Trump bashed the reports on Twitter:

CNN disclosed Tuesday that U.S. intelligence chiefs presented the classified information to Trump last week during his briefing on a report about Russian hacking during the November election.

The alleged compromising information was included as an addendum to the report — and the synopsis was based in part on a 35-page compilation of memos.

Those documents were from a retired British intelligence operative whose past work U.S. intelligence officials considered credible.

The synopsis was considered by intelligence officials to have contained information so sensitive it was included only in an addendum — and only shared with Trump, President Barack Obama and eight top congressional leaders.

The FBI has not confirmed many of the allegations put forth in the memos.

James Comey, the FBI director, also declined Tuesday to tell Congress whether Trump's ties to the Russian government were under investigation.
