Marquette Poll: Romney Overtakes Santorum in Wisconsin

Mitt Romney has taken the lead from Rick Santorum in Wisconsin among those expecting to vote in the GOP primary April 3. The former Massachusetts governor had trailed Santorum in February by 16 points but now leads 39 percent to 31 percent, a new Marquette Law School Poll showed.

“In February, Santorum was at the high point of his campaign following wins in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado,” said Marquette Law School Poll Director Charles Franklin. “Since that time Romney has come from behind to win in Michigan and Ohio, while Santorum has done well in Southern states. Wisconsin represents Santorum’s most important chance to win another Midwest victory, while for Romney continued success here would set up a showdown in Santorum’s home state of Pennsylvania.”

In a head-to-head matchup with President Barack Obama, Romney trails by five points, 48 percent to 43 percent. However, the gap has narrowed since February when Obama led by double digits.

The poll surveyed 707 registered Wisconsin voters by both landline and cellphone March 22-25.
