Willie Nelson will head a rally for Rep. Beto O'Rourke later this month as the Texas Democrat works to deny Republican Sen. Ted Cruz a second term in November.

"If we're going to win and elect Beto to the Senate, we need Texans to vote for him," O'Rourke's campaign said on an event page for the Sept. 29 rally in Austin. "And what's more Texan than Willie Nelson? (Nothing!)."

While Nelson, 85, has performed for presidents, he has never appeared in support of a political candidate, Rolling Stone reports.

In July, Nelson brought O'Rourke onstage during a concert near Austin to perform "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," according to the magazine.

Other performers at the rally will include Joe Ely, Carrie Rodriguez, Tameca Jones, and Nelson's sons Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson.

Nelson is from the central Texas town of Abbott.

In addition, O'Rourke attended a New York City fundraiser Wednesday, hosted by Andy Cohen of the Bravo late-night show "Watch What Happens," with tickets costing $500 to $1,000, CNBC reports.

In the Texas Senate race, the Real Clear Politics polling average Thursday showed Cruz with a 3.2 percent lead over O'Rourke.
